English 9

Course Overview

English 9 is about one key question: How can stories connect us to our world and stir us to action? God has revealed himself to us through stories, and part of how we are wired as humans is to communicate through stories. This is an English course, so it is about reading, writing, and communication, but it also examines many social justice issues,and seeks to stir up the students’ desire for the world to be made right. God has a big plan to redeem all things, and we are commissioned to participate in that plan of redemption, so this course is an opportunity for students to catch God’s heart of compassion for the last, the least, and the lost.

The course begins by helping the students to connect to stories from around the world, and hearing about some of the challenges that people around the world are facing today. Students will read Iqbal, view documentaries about global issues, and choose a second novel that deals with a global issue that interests them.

Students will then learn about other ways to tell stories. In today’s world stories can be told, not just orally or in print, but also through pictures, movies, comics, newspapers, online articles, blogs, poetry, songs, documentaries, presentations, and TED talks. This unit will explore these other storytelling methods, and give students a chance to practice telling their own stories in a variety of ways.

As the course wraps up, the students will have a chance to become storytellers themselves, and to make the world a better place through their storytelling. Students will be able to choose a global issue that God has stirred their heart for, choose a storytelling method that works well for them, and then present their story in a way that will help other people catch their passion.


Time Commitment:

This course consists of 28 lessons. Each lesson is designed to take approximately one week, with most weeks comprised of four 40 minute sessions. Students who wish to complete the course in a single semester can complete lessons at their own pace.


Students are required to stream videos contained within the course content, download and print assignments, scan (either by taking pictures or physically scanning) and upload their assignments within Moodle. Students will need to be able to create videos, and to use OneNote or an equivalent software.

Students will need to borrow or purchase two novels:

  • One of the following choices:

    • Bitter Chocolate by Sally Grindley
