Course Overview

A student reflects on the question: What do you think this course taught you?

“It taught me how to read in between the lines and to connect to the characters in the book to understand them better in the book. In lesson one, I didn't know anything really about writing. But now, I know a lot!”

In two novel studies, "Dancing Through the Snow" by Jean Little and the classic CS Lewis “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” the course gives you an opportunity to respond in a variety of reading strategies ranging from answering higher level thinking questions, making predictions and connections, using art, poetry, journal responses to express ideas and explore the deeper questions of “What picture of life is the author painting?”   You will be amazed at how you begin to read your own novels differently!

Writing is a skill, just like playing soccer or the violin.  You need to be shown how, to have practice (and more practice!) and to follow your coach’s helpful suggestions for improvement. This course offers you a tool box of skills which are presented, practiced and mastered through creating imaginative fun stories from three pictures, developing and publishing a report on Canada’s History, and writing and writing and writing!  Imagine how confident you will feel about your writing after all that!
